Assignment #1: Fast Internet Speeds in Small Towns

1. According to the article, some internet connections in rural communities are ten times quicker.
2. These small communities, and many more, have fast internet because they have high-throughput fiber-optic cables deployed directly into homes and businesses, enabling the quickest-yet speeds of up to 1,000 megabits, or one gigabit, per second.
3. They are really fortunate because their owners are very forward-thinking. This means that they are way ahead of the curve in terms of wanting to provide the best technology available.
4. The community Olds decided to build their own fiber network because the community did not want sluggish internet. They paid for this with government grants and loans.  
5. The University of Waterloo opened a campus there, and Royal Bank opened a $400-million data center.
6. Bell's Aliant unit has brought fiber to more than a million premises in Atlantic Canada, and also to Northern Ontario.
7. Small towns need high-speed internet more than ever to keep employers and residents from fleeing to hooked-up cities.
8. The Federal government has supplied $305-million subsidy to ensure nearly every household in the country has at least minimal, five megabit-per-second broadband.
