Facing Fake News

After reading the article I learned that the term "yellow journalism" came from a popular New York world comic called "Hogan's Alley." This featured a character dressed in yellow named the "The Yellow Kid."This was Led by newspaper owners William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer.

Satire Versus Fake News. Themanatee.net published a story on how the government of New Brunswick cuts funding to Santa Claus.The Dangers of and Reasons for Fake News, "Click-bait." The 18-year-old, who lives in the small Eastern European town of Veles, says he made at least $60,000 in the past six months by posting fake news about the American Election. I think that this is true because people have done this a lot. They think of something that they could get people to believe and then they lead them in with a good title. After they watch this fake news, it gets spread around. 

Fake or real news. In the first video they asked 7,800 students if they could tell the difference. More than 82% of them were not able tell the difference. In the second video they had  fake and real news that was on the internet and ask them to tell the difference. Most of the people had a hard time with telling the difference . Don't Believe Everything You Hear Or See On The Internet. Most of the time it is not true. 

Spotting Fake News. In the videos they mainly say to be careful about the fake and real news because you never know what might be the right one. Most of the News story's they talked about were mostly about Donald Trump.

Whistle Blowing

The article I picked was the one on Vice News Canada. It is about how Canada made up these certain laws that will protect journalists and their anonymous sources from search warrants and police surveillance. Bill S-231, was first introduced by Conservative Senator Claude Carignan in November 2016 after news broke that Quebec and Montreal police had been spying on journalists to find the sources of embarrassing leaks. The new bill allows journalists the right to refuse to disclose information or documents that could identify a source who has requested anonymity.

I think that we should have the right to know what are government is doing and what they are planning on doing/talking about. However, I do believe that some of the things that the government knows, are things that should be kept unsaid. I feel this way because they may know things that we shouldn't know.

I think that its good because it makes it harder for the police and other agents to find out who the whistleblowers are.

Caught in Lies

Most of the news I hear/read/watch today usually seems legit. I do however know that there is a lot of fake news out there today. Some of them are doing it on purpose because they are doing it for comedy/attention. To me I think that making fake news is dumb because there are people that believe it, then they start to tell others and that specific news gets spread around when it is not true.

When I read the news articles I thought that they were surprising, but after reading them and really thinking about it,  it does not shock me to see that professional journalists have fabricated news. I think they should do news that is real and that is important to the people reading. 

I agree with Shafer's assertion because liars tend to make things up and convince themselves that what they are telling others is true. This is also how I believe that this is also a reason on why a lot of rumours get spread across the world about government and other things like that. 

I truly believe that colleagues and universities should make sure graduating journalism students can handle the type of stuff that is going to thrown at them. They will need to use these types of skills when they are out in the real world.

This is a hard-hitting story on a plague outbreak in Madagascar. It has a sad/depressing point of view. Since August, it has killed 94 people. The headline of the article states that they in need of help. This is also another way that shows how this is Hard News.

There is a lot of people over the world that watch the walking dead, and also listen to the news about that show. This is one soft news story where the type of story it is can be based solely on the topic and the headline.

This is a news story that has been in the public view since October 13, 2017. It is the latest rescue mission to happen in which there are firefighters and civilians trying to get to there loved ones, and to try and save some of their personal belongings. I gave it a 4/4 on timing because it is an update on the California wildfires.

Significance - 4/4 

I gave it a 4/4 on significance because of the number of people killed, and homes destroyed. At least 35 people have been killed and over 5000 homes and businesses have been destroyed. It has not only grabbed the attention of the people of California but also has been seen by many over the world. 

Proximity - 3/4 

The geographical proximity is not close to a Canadian reader, but Canadians can connect to this story as we have had our share of fires that have almost turned disastrous. It is a story that connects to Canadian history, and it is a story we hope has an ending that turns in a positive way.

Prominence - 2/4 

The story has prominence because of the number of people killed and the unique rescue attempts that are being made. I gave it a lower mark because few know who these people are in the world. Even now their names were not mentioned anywhere.

Human Interest - 4/4 

This story appeals greatly to emotion as people hope and pray that the fire outbreak calms down and no more deaths occur.

This news story happened on April 26, 2015.  On Saturday, a 33-year-old man died after falling five stories in a rappelling event in downtown Montreal. I gave it a 2/4 because this is an old article and this accident happened two years ago. 

Significance - 3/4
I gave it a 3/4 on significance because this incident happened in Montreal. Montreal is very close to New Brunswick. It is about eight and a half hours from here.

Proximity - 2/4
This happened relativity close to New Brunswick, but I do not think the incident was big enough for people to know about it world wide, so that is why I gave it a 2/4 on proximity.

Prominence - 2/4
This story has prominence, but not enough to get a higher mark. why? because few people know about what happened and also that not a lot of people know who this guy was.

Human Interest - 4/4
This story appeals greatly to emotion as people hope and pray that nothing like this happens ever again and that people will always be safe when doing a rappelling event.

Sunnyvale Tragedy

Early this week, Sunnyvale trailer park was struck by a tragedy. The tragedy was a tornado that struck down early Saturday morning around 8:30am.

With support from the rescue team and people from the trailer park coming together, they are able to help out and make the situation better than what it is. They are all coming together to help the people that are in need and to also help clean up the mess that has happened. Residents are starting to build shelters for the people who are without

According to the Fire Chief. Waterbomb the damage was so extensive that it will take weeks to completely clean the mess that has been caused. "We are all traumatized from what has come into play, but we will recover from it" said Waterbomb.

"I feel terrible about what happened and I will feel very relieved when everything clears up and becomes peaceful again" said Sally Washburgers.

In this news article, it involves two Ontario men who were sentenced 20 and 22 years in prison respectively on Thursday after prosecutors had called for life terms for their role bringing nearly 2,500 kilos of cocaine into Ontario in 2013. They are Vito Buffone of Caledone and Jeffery Kompon of Welland. Their sentence comes amid as a “large scale drug investigation” targeting cartel members in southern Ontario, Niagara Regional Police spokesman Phil Gavin told VICE News on Friday. I found that this article was very simple to read and that the lead got straight to the point. this article informed us of the most important details in the beginning and also towards the end. In this article Phil Gavin told VICE News on Friday, The sentencing comes amid a “large scale drug investigation” targeting cartel members in southern Ontario. I found that this article doesn't have a great ending because it just cuts off after telling what the drug smugglers were sentenced with.

In this article, it involves A 29-year-old Quebec man who was sentenced to nine years in prison on Friday after he was found guilty of attempting to join Islamic State militants abroad in Syria. Ismael Habib was the first adult in Canada to be convicted at trial for travelling abroad to participate in terrorism, an offence that was added to the criminal code in 2013. A Quebec Court gave Habib eight years for attempting to leave Canada to fight with an extremist group. He also gave him one year for providing false information in order to obtain a passport. Yes, the lead was effective because they got their point across and made it very easy to understand. Majority of the information was told in the middle of the article. it stated most of the information I mentioned above. Habib says he wants to leave Canada to live out his religious beliefs and desire to join ISIS. yes, the article has a good ending. it closes off with some good facts and doesn't leave us on a cliff hanger.

The First Newspaper

When I look at the first ever newspaper and compare it to the ones you I today, they're very different, but also have their similarities. The first thing I notice is the way that 'Publick' is spelled. There is also no pictures or bold headings. However the  pages look similar to the ones we look at and read about now. These are the similarities and differences that I noticed.  

No, I do not completely think the government should have that much control over what news should be, but I do believe that they should have some control because I think they should have some sort of say on why is going to publicized. In my opinion the news is about important things that are going on in the world. Sometimes the government doesn't want certain things to be out there, but they should be said. This is probably one the main reasons why the government wants to have a part in it. 

I think it is critical to the government, businesses and etc. We need to see the hidden side of these things. People don't want to hear everyday their favorite store or restaurant has something wrong with it or how your local Mayor did something he wasn't supposed to do. I believe that the people who buy and support newspapers, help from getting the paper shut down. People need to see the real side of things and organizations. 

No, I was not surprised that the first newspaper was published in Halifax. I was not surprising because Halifax has a pretty big population and there was also probably a lot of people that liked the organization and wanted to support it.

My picture shows what a Blackville school bus would look like. It represents the school because it has the logo on it. I did not find anything challenging about this assignment. No I do not any interest in doing digital art. I am not a computer person. No, I would never do auto detailing as a job. It is way to frustrating.

I chose to edit this picture because it look like it was the easiest one to edit. The part that was most challenging was having to blend in spots that were missing. Also I had to clone his hair, because it was cut off. No I have never retouched a photo because I just never really thought of having to edit them. No I would not want to do this as a job because I get to frustrated while doing this.

Freak of Nature

I selected a Cat and a Squirrel because they of my two favorite animals. I found this whole assignment challenging. I was very frustrated throughout all of it. Nothing was easy about this. My creation looks very photo-shopped. It does not look realistic at all. No i have not used photo editing software before. Mostly because it is to frustrating for me.

Hatchback- A hatchback is a car with a sloping back and a hinged rear door that opens towards the sky. These cars range from SUVs, MPVs or vans. They are usually much more compact. Automobile Design

1. It takes ten years to design a car and they start off with the sketching phase that is mostly done on the computer.

2.  Design is called problem solving because they have to find a design that is pleasing to everyone with no flaws.

3. The feasibility stage is when they take their sketches and make sure they can actually be done and match up with the engineering. This is the largest part to designing a car and is where all the negotiating comes in play.

4. I don't think designing an automobile would interest me because it's a very stressful job and you need to be creative with your ideas.  

Careers and Certification in the Automotive Industry

Part One of Three

1. Some of the high-tech systems on automobiles today that were unheard of 30 years ago are:

2.  Some areas that young people have skills for a career as an automotive technician are:

• Technician skills
• Math
• Science
• Communication

3. Automobile technicians can begin their career after only two years of education, so they can start their work sooner, and start making money.

4. There are expected to be 237 500, jobs as a automobile technician, with a 30% growth rate.

5. The automotive technician career is fairly immune to outsourcing of jobs, unlike careers such as computer programming, accounting services, and customer call center work.

6. Four other positions that an automotive technician can do in the automotive industry are:

• With schools and colleges as a instructor 
• Work in the technician services 
• High performance rebuilding and machining 
• Work in parts distribution and wholesaling

7. The automotive technician role is sometimes called "the portal career" because so many people have started their career in the automotive aftermarket as an automotive technician.

Reflection

What I think would be interesting about being a automobile technician is learning all the new stuff about cars and how to fix them. Something I found interesting about the film was how it's kind of like a mystery when they get in an automobile and they have to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it. The notion of life-long learning is important for these workers because there will always be something new they have to learn because technology is always advancing. If people don't try to learn, they wont be able to do their job because they wouldn't know how it works and how to solve the issue. Some skills or characteristics that an automotive technician should have are; the ability to communicate with people, basic math, science, and English skills.

Part Two

NATEF- The mission of the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) is to improve the quality of automotive technician training programs nationwide at secondary, also post-secondary, public and proprietary schools.
SGS- Their purpose is to help every player in the automotive industry improve performance and reduce risk, they focus on the design, construction and operation of motor vehicle inspection solutions all over the world.

ASE-is short for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Since 1972 our independent non-profit organization has worked to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service by testing and certifying automotive professionals.

Part Three

I think the job I would enjoy the most would be "Super car Test Driver." I would enjoy this because it seems like a very fun and interesting job. I also like to drive fast vehicles. The job I think I would enjoy the least would be a "Car Designer." I am not interested in designing anything. I like to look at the finished project.

Part Two of Two - Tech for the Sake of Tech?

• It didn't surprise me at all that the younger generation, age 21-38, didn't want this technology. People in my generation would probably use these qualities a lot more because we use technology a lot more than the last generation and it would be safer.
• I think that these technologies only make it more dangerous. The people would probably be more concentrated on trying to figure out how the technology works than driving. This may cause accidents. 
• The people that I know, they don't really consider the technology when buying a new car. They more look at what the car is like in the road and how much space there is inside. The only technology they really look for is cruise control. That is basically it. 
• When purchasing my own automobile, I think I would look for the in-car cell phone options. This option is important because it would save you from looking for your phone. In the car it is synced with Bluetooth. 
• One new feature that older drivers may have thought was useless is in 1935, when flashing turn signals were invented. They may have thought they would never need it. Now whenever you go to turn you need to use it. 

Part One of Two - Technologies in Development

• Out of the six car technologies that I viewed, I think the Flying Car technology would be the least likely to happen. There are too many issues that go against this from happening, and to be realistic it is too dangerous.
• I think that car to car communication will have the most impact on today's society. This is basically like the cars telling each other where they are going and how fast they are moving. Although it's pretty strange, it will prevent a lot of accidents.
• The technology that is almost a reality is probably the Tesla Supercharge Stations. I think this because they already have some of them around, in places like California and Florida. 
• Ford's"Driver Workload Estimator", from what I can understand, measures the levels of stress the driver is under in certain situations. I think this technology could keep the driver safer by allowing them to concentrate on the road in certain situations.
•  Some advantages would be its speed, which is 200mph and its ability to cover large distances in a short period of time. Another advantage is that no runway is needed and you can choose whether a spot is land-able or not. A disadvantage for the car would be it probably costs a lot of money. No middle class people would be able to buy this car, only rich people. 
• The idea of a self driving car to many people around the world. Sure it may be an advancement in technology and potentially safer, but I think it takes the true meaning out of driving. This would take the fun away from driving. People should g=have their own choice on wanting to drive or not.

• 1908- Model T is introduced. Henry Ford starts making the Model T. This is interesting because it's really cool that they made that many cars, 10 660 cars in the first year of production. 
• 1913- First moving assembly line for automobiles developed. This is interesting because as a result of this, the Model T's prices can go lower and become more affordable. 
• 1939- First air conditioning system added to automobiles. I find this interesting because without this first air conditioner, there wouldn't be much chance of us having air conditioners now, that was our foundation for the modern-day thing.
• 1919- First single foot pedal to operate coupled four-wheel brakes. I find this interesting because before this, drivers had to use separate hand and foot brakes simultaneously.

1. The assembly line changed from suggestions made by Henry Ford because instead of the workers moving down the line the line itself moved.
2. They tend to stay longer and was more committed to the company because he treated them fairly in terms of pay. He was guaranteeing a more “livable wage” than anyone else was.
3. They cost a little over $1000.00. It was made for the common man.

4. The model T price dropped to $800 dollars then dropped to about $300 dollars. I think that it dropped so much because other companies started making cars and he wanted people buying cars from him.

5. The automobile offered people to travel whenever they wanted and they didn’t have to rely on the railroads for transportation, they could do it whenever they wanted.
